Why Choose Stony Brook?
Stony Brook University, widely regarded as a SUNY flagship, was established in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of mathematics and science. The first campus was located in Oyster Bay, Long Island, on the grounds of a former Gold Coast estate. In 1962, a new campus was built near the historic village of Stony Brook on land donated by local philanthropist Ward Melville.
Part of the State University of New York system, the University has grown tremendously and is now recognized as one of the nation’s important centers of learning and scholarship — carrying out the mandate given by the State Board of Regents in 1960 to become a university that would “stand with the finest in the country.”
The University campus lies about 60 miles east of Manhattan and 60 miles west of Montauk Point. It is only a short distance to the Atlantic beaches of the south shore and the vineyards of the East End. Situated on 1,039 acres on the north shore of Long Island, Stony Brook University has a four-season climate, tempered by proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound.
The University has a five-part mission:

Students have the option to choose to live in two types of living communities, corridor or suite style. These options depends on the community you choose and the rooms available. Corridor Style includes: Mendelsohn, H, & Roosevelt Communities. Suite Style includes: Chávez, Tubman, Nobles, Roosevelt, Kelly, Roth, & Tabler communities. Apartment Style housing includes: Chapin, Schomburg, & West.
Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) is a housing option in which two or more students share a bedroom, suite and/or apartment regardless of the students' sex, gender identity or gender expression. In other words, this option allows for students of any gender identity to live together regardless of sex assigned at birth.
Gender Inclusive Housing is not recommended or intended for: living with significant others, only specific people, and/or to get to a specific location within housing. Choosing to live in GIH is an agreement for the whole year, and you will not be permitted to room change to a non-GIH space after being approved. Similarly if you do not choose to live in GIH for the upcoming year, you will only be able to choose rooms based on the gender identity listed on your student record. Appeals to leave or join GIH mid-year can be made in the housing portal. If you are interested, you will need to review and agree to all items below in your housing application before being approved for Gender Inclusive Housing.
